Grammar School Curriculum

Grammar Stage (K—6)

Grammar School Curriculum | Veritas Collegiate Academy | Christian SchoolBible: The students will learn Bible basics – the plan of salvation, the Books of the Bible in order, the major events of biblical history and the theological importance of these events.  Our biblical studies teach the following:

  • Encourage the students to understand the biblical verses in context;
  • Let the Scriptures speak for themselves, with illustrations by the teacher;
  • Show the students the richness of the Bible;
  • Educate on the biblical pattern of salvation, Law before Grace; and
  • Encourage students to come to the Father, through the Son, and grow spiritually.

English:  Students will be equipped with the skills necessary for good writing, including spelling, grammar, style and clarity. A major emphasis is placed on writing by requiring the students to write often and correctly in each subject area. Students are encouraged to think clearly and required to write clearly. Students are introduced to many styles of writing using the Bible and other high quality literature.

History and Geography: Students will learn about God's hand in the history of the world and the United States. Students will broaden their understanding of history and geography as they mature. They will begin with local history and geography in first grade, and the scope will sequentially expand to the world. We seek to make history and geography "come alive" through many forms (e.g., biographies, illustrations, field trips, guest speakers, music, art, foods, and architecture). We seek to give the students a thorough understanding of western civilization; its distinctive, great leaders, great movements, and great thinkers; and its contribution to the growth of Christianity.

Mathematics: Students will develop a thorough mastery of basic mathematical functions and tables. We put an emphasis on conceptual, as well as practical, understanding of math. We will illustrate God's unchanging character through timeless, logical mathematical systems. He gave man the gift of reason, and we explore this gift.

Reading: Students will learn the primary building blocks of reading through phonics. Students are encouraged to read correctly as soon as possible (normally in Kindergarten or first grade). Students are introduced to high quality children’s literature through our Literature program. We carefully monitor the student's reading abilities to ensure adequate comprehension, fluent reading, both orally and silently, and proper use of word-attack skills. We seek to foster a life-long love of reading, specifically high quality literature.

Art: Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing to create adequate renderings. Students are encouraged to appreciate and imitate the beauty of art in their own works. We introduce students to the works of the master artists of Western culture, and equip them to use correctly a variety of art/media.

Music: Students will learn to use their God-given voices to make a joyful sound in their music class. They will perform at regularly events and concerts, including graduation. We desire to glorify God through the arts.

Physical Education:  Students will participate in organized physical education three times per week. We educate the whole child, not just the mind.
